Summer of 1944

September 22, 2026

Where Their Stories Crossed

In the summer of 1944, my great‑grandmother was serving in the Luftwaffe as a Blitzmädel. That was the nickname for the young women who worked the giant telephone switchboards, connecting calls all day long. The work was fast, loud, and sometimes stressful, but she liked it, because she got to hear voices from all over the airfield.

One of those voices belonged to my great‑grandfather.

He was a Fallschirmjäger, a German paratrooper. By 1944 he had already survived Crete, the Eastern Front, Sicily, and Italy. His regiment was sent back to Germany to rest and rebuild, and that’s how he ended up at Fliegerhorst Helmstedt, the same base where she worked.

A Voice on the Line

My great‑grandmother told my grandmother that he flirted with her over the phone. He apparently had a lot of admirers and he was even engaged at one time to another woman. One of his photos was dedicated to his fiancée, which proves she wasn’t exaggerating.

But something about her voice must have stood out to him, because he kept calling the switchboard just to talk to her.

Eventually, he asked her out.

Their First Outings

The photos from that summer show them on walks with friends, laughing, posing, and exploring the woods and paths around the base. She wore a light summer dress, and he wore his Luftwaffe uniform with the rank of Obergefreiter, this was before he was promoted to Feldwebel later that year.

They went on group dates with other paratroopers and their girlfriends.

These pictures show a side of the war that doesn’t usually make it into history books, the moments when people tried to live normal lives, even when the world around them wasn’t normal at all.

Why This Summer Mattered

This was the summer they fell in love.

It was the last peaceful season before the final, chaotic year of the war. They didn’t know what was coming next, but in these photos they look happy, relaxed, and hopeful. These moments became the beginning of our family’s story.

Why I Chose to Showcase This

I wanted to show that history isn’t only battles and uniforms. It’s also people meeting, talking, laughing, and choosing each other. Without this summer, without those phone calls and those walks, I wouldn’t be here to tell their story.

This is the chapter where my great‑grandparents met, and everything that came after began here.
